How to store and eat pomelo during Tet holiday without it drying out or getting sour: soak pomelo in water for a sweet and juicy treat

Pomelo is a delicious and healthy fruit that is often enjoyed during festive occasions. Especially during Tet, pomelo is an essential fruit for offering and celebrating. So how can you preserve pomelo for a few months, so that it remains delicious for Tet?

Preserving pomelo with sand

To preserve pomelo for a long time, you should choose a clean and dry place, then spread some carton sheets. After that, cover a layer of dry sand on top, then arrange the pomelos in rows.

While arranging, you should place the larger fruits at the bottom and the smaller fruits on top. Only stack them in 2 layers, do not stack too many as it will flatten the pomelos at the bottom.

Dry sand has good moisture absorption properties, helping you preserve the delicious aroma of pomelo for about 4 – 6 months and prevent spoilage due to mold.

Applying lime

A simple way to preserve pomelo for Tet is to dab lime on the stem of the pomelo. Lime is an alkaline substance that helps prevent bacteria because of its high alkalinity. The stem of the pomelo is vulnerable to bacterial invasion, which can cause the fruit to rot. Therefore, instead of applying lime to the whole fruit, you only need to focus on applying it to the top of the stem to kill bacteria. Then cover it with a layer of paper or carton and place the pomelo on top. However, avoid stacking multiple layers of pomelos on top of each other. You should also keep them in a dry and well-ventilated corner of the house, away from moisture.

Preserving with nylon bags

After harvesting or buying the pomelos for about 5 – 10 days, use lime water to apply on the pomelo’s stem. This method aims to prevent microorganisms from entering the pomelo from the stem.

Then, put each pomelo in a nylon bag and tie it tightly, avoiding contact with water and humidity. This method aims to prevent air from coming into contact with the pomelo. When wrapped in a nylon bag, the pomelo will retain its freshness for a longer time.

Using bamboo racks to preserve pomelo

If you have bamboo racks at home, you can also use them to preserve a large quantity of pomelos.

First, move the bamboo racks to a cool and ventilated place, avoiding direct sunlight, then start stacking the pomelos on the racks. The distance between the lower and upper layers of the racks should be 30cm.

This method can preserve the pomelos for about 1 – 2 months. However, due to environmental factors, pomelos stored for a long time (more than 2 months) may not retain their full flavor. Therefore, if you have preserved the pomelos using bamboo racks, you should enjoy them as soon as possible!

Using mesh bags to preserve pomelo

If you need to preserve a large quantity of pomelos for convenient transportation, buying, and selling, you should use mesh bags.

First, you can drill holes around a foam box or cardboard box to create a breathable environment. Then, put the pomelos in mesh bags and stack them inside the box. This way, you can transport them without worrying about spoilage.

During the preservation process, you should regularly check if the pomelo bags are moist and if any fruits have ripened. If so, replace the bags and separate the ripe fruits to prevent mold from spreading to other fruits!

Storing pomelo under the bed

In the past, people used to store pomelos under the bed, as it is a dark place where bacteria have a harder time growing on fruits. However, when using this method, you should regularly check for any issues with the fruits and remove any spoiled ones to prevent them from affecting the others.

Preserving pomelo for rituals and offerings

Choose a dry and well-ventilated corner, then place 3 bricks on the floor. After that, place a cardboard box on top of the bricks and spread a layer of dry sand about 5 – 7cm thick in the bottom of the box.

Next, arrange the pomelos on top and cover them with another layer of sand. Repeat this process until the box is filled with pomelos, then sprinkle a 20cm thick layer of sand on top.

This method helps keep the pomelos fresh and in a beautiful shape, with a sweet and refreshing taste, for about 1 – 2 months, to be used for rituals and offerings.

Tips for choosing delicious pomelos

Good pomelos have a firm and shiny outer skin, slightly tinged with yellow, with a round and evenly shaped fruit. When held in your hand, they feel heavy and solid, indicating they are juicy and not dry inside.

You can check if the pomelo has a thick or thin skin by lightly tapping the skin with your fingertips. If you hear a ‘thud’ sound, it means the pomelo has a thick skin, while a ‘crackle’ sound indicates a thin skin, which is preferable to choose.

Observe the spiky bumps on the skin of the pomelo. The larger the bumps, the riper and tastier the pomelo. Avoid choosing pomelos with small bumps or densely packed bumps, as they are usually unripe and taste sour, not sweet.
